About Together With Me, Learn Chinese Culture and Language by Enjoying and Practicing Painting, Music and Poetry (Volume 2) and Its Participants.
Hello, thank you for picking up the second volume of Together With Me, Learn Chinese Culture and Language by Enjoying and Practicing Painting, Music and Poetry (Poetry, Painting, Music: Comprehensive and Artistic Chinese).

This series of publications can be used as textbooks or reference material of the courses Chinese as a Foreign Language, Chinese Culture, Chinese Classical Poetry, and be used by non-Chinese speakers to Learn Chinese Culture and Language by Enjoying Multiple Chinese Arts.

This series is one of the results of the research jobs of my cross-cultural and comprehensive art and its project (the other jobs are creating, teaching and business,'such as art exhibitions). The latter uses Chinese classical poetry as the medium to combine both traditional Chinese painting and modern Chinese language together, to create a Vocal, Bilingual Chinese Poems, Paintings and Articles Series, for founding and adding a new subject ( Poetry, Painting, Music: Comprehensive and Artistic Chinese) in the Chinese as a foreign language field, to create a new and comprehensive art form in the pure art field, and to explore and seek a new way of cultural transmission in the cultural communication field.

The purpose of creating the cross-cultural and comprehensive art is to help non-Chinese speakers to learn Chinese culture and language by enjoying and practicing Chinese painting, singing and reciting Chinese poem songs, learning about and writing Chinese characters, listening to and feeling Chinese music and stories... via enjoying and learning multiple-arts, poetry, music, painting, calligraphy, stamps and cultural background behind, to make the process of learning Chinese culture and language more natural, easy and artistic; meanwhile, doing some similar study and creative work to deliver Western culture and language to China and to other places in the world.

The main body of the contents of the 2nd volume follows the first volume which was published by Jinan University Press in May, 2013, but added something more.

The main body includes:

Fifteen Chinese classical poems from the Western Zhou Dynasty (c. 11th century-771 B.C.) to the Song Dynasty (960 -1279), and mainly includes Landscape, Feelings (love, friendship and farewell), philosophy and encouragement and so on.

Fifteen Chinese paintings for illustrating the artistic conceptions of these poems.

Fifteen pieces of music settings for these poems.

Thirty Chinese poem songs in Chinese and in English

Fifteen groups of recitation in Chinese.

Fifteen groups of recordings of the vocabulary.

Fifteen comments on the poems, their authors, backgrounds, explanations of the poem line by line and word by word, vocabulary and inspirations.

The main differences from the first volume in this publication:

Compare with the first volume, this volume has kept the basic style of the main body similar as first volume but made some change mainly in the Part I. The biggest change is that this volume has added Appendix -- Cultural Background and Appendixes -- Contemporary Chinese Paintings and Music by 8 of my professors.

In painting, besides the Chinese paintings I did for the Chinese poems and music, 6 of my Chinese painting professors from both of Chinese National Academy of Arts and China Central Academy of Fine Arts have offered 50 paintings for the second volume. Because of their good help and support, you can see some advanced contemporary Chinese paintings for all of them are acdamic leaders in their fields. One of them is a supervisor of candidates for doctoral degrees and 5 of them are supervisors for candidates for master degrees.

Besides, my first Chinese painting teacher who is a Professor of Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts also offered some of his Chinese paintings.

In music, my music professor has sung 3 poem songs for this volume, offered 3 pieces of music which he created and played the piano.

Thirdly, in poetry, besides the poems in this volume are listed chronologically, I have also written a series background articles, includes 4 on Chinese history; 7 on Chinese poetry, 7 on Chinese painting and 1 on Chinese music.

Plus there is a link to the specific supporting web site, I would like to create the content frame of this volume as a little pyramid, and hope it will be help with you to understand the main body better.

About the value of this publication series, the Division of Teaching Materials at Hanban (The National Leading Group Office of Chinese Language Council International ) / Confucius Institute Headquarters checked the Volume 1 and gave their sincere evaluation in an appraisal report on August 19, 2013. Here is part of their comments:

The conception of the book is novel.

From the perspective of foreign language teaching, the publication combines graphics, essays, recitations, singing audio and various forms, it offers overseas Chinese learners a natural, convenient and artistic approaches to learn Chinese and Chinese classical culture .

It is commendable that the translations of the poems, the paintings, recitations and singing were all completed by Shirley Yiping Zhang, it undoubtedly indicates her good knowledge background and a high artistic talent and skill level.

From the perspective of cultural transmission, the author has created music and paintings for the classical poems, and she wishes to endow the ancient Chinese traditional poetry and painting with some totally new forms of transmission to deliver Chinese culture abroad. This should also be worthy of recognition.
