Shirley,

I have attached some corrections for the articles Ao Lei.Yi Lan and the daily Chinese article about the earthquake in South Asia. I hope that you will find them useful...:-)

I have also attached an attempted translation of an article from the People's Daily website about the discovery of an unusually large galaxy in the early Universe. It certainly made me appreciate all the hard work you do in providing the Daily Chinese articles, and also gave me some practise at using a Chinese dictionary... :-)

I really loved your song from the Chinese opera, even though due to problems with Real Player I was only able to hear about two thirds of it. I would love to hear you sing some more songs from Chinese opera.

Mike

CORRECTIONS FOR AO LEI YI LAN:

Hi, friends, today I would like to introduce a song called The white rose By the Heilong River. The song comes from a Chinese opera, Ao Lei •Yi Lan, which is about a heroine from Chinese history.
We usually say ¡°a song called...¡± not a song, names¡¡±
If you want to use the word ¡°relative¡±, we say that something is ¡°relative to¡± not ¡°relatives to¡±.

In the middle of the 17th century, Russia invaded China near the Wusuli River under the guise of trade and kidnapped the Chinese delegate who was from the Da Wo Er nation.

His daughter Ao Lei •Yi Lan led their tribe to fight against the aggression and offered herself as a hostage in place of her father, but her father had already been killed and she was locked up in a Russian jail near Moscow for 7 years.

The Russian army then invaded China again, taking Ao Lei •Yi Lan with them. On the way, they met Ao Lei •Yi Lan¡¯s mother and she sacrificed her own life to save her daughter.

The enemies were afraid that Ao Lei •Yi Lan would lead her people to fight them again, so they spread the rumor that Ao Lei •Yi Lan had surrendered and this caused her to lose the trust of her people and her boyfriend.

There was a soldier in the Russian army, Ye Fei Mu Ka, who was touched by Ao Lei •Yi Lan¡¯s escape from the army. He met Ao Lei •Yi Lan¡¯s boyfriend and told him of her bravery in jail.

Then Ao Lei •Yi Lan and her boyfriend met and led their people to defeat the Russian army and then she returned to her hometown.

This is just the song that was sung by Ye Fei Mu Ka. I have not seen whole of this opera, I just edited this article according to the movie Ao Lei •Yi Lan and I hope I did not make any mistakes about this story. :-)

MAIN MEANING OF THE SONG

A white rose is blooming by the Hei Long River,
Ao Lei •Yi Lan girl loves it deeply, The girl Ao Lei •Yi Lan loves it deeply,
She has sung for it in a loud voice She has sung for it loudly,
she has wept for it as well. She has wept for it too.

Ao Lei •Yi Lan girl is a so brave one, The girl Ao Lei •Yi Lan is so brave,
she came back her hometown after going thousands miles,
Her heart is like a rose that¡¯s just bloomed,
It has never been touched by dust, fog or frost.

She loves Hei Long Jiang her own land,
She loves Da Wo Er her own nation;
No matter how many excruciation or whipping she had suffered,
No matter how much she was tortured or whipped,
She has never lowered her proud head, maybe ¡°bowed her proud head would be better

Even though the white rose has withered now,
This heroic story will stay in my heart forever,
I will take this flower to my hometown,
and let the heroic story to be spread everywhere... and let everyone know of this heroic story
