Flower is my favorite. No matter where I was and what I did, I planted flowers, bought flowers and painted flowers. Even though right now, when I am a student in the US,I buy flowers for my apartment often.

So, if I know a friend, a work partner, a teacher or a classmate very well, I usually send them flowers as gifts in the important festival; instead of taking the other gifts, I like to pick up my guests, to see a patient, to visit my friends with a bunch of flowers, so that people said that I am good at "flower diplomatist". :- )

Anyway, I seldom send roses, unless they are in some flower basket or in a bunch of flowers. Because, in Chinese culture, roses, I mean the red rose symbolizes love, it is the gift between lovers, or family members...

This Chinese Xinjiang folk song just writes a love snippet of a couple of lovers with singing something about roses.

First of all, a young boy names Yi Fen Du Da Er called his beloved girl San Di Ma Li Ya "a lovely rose" and told her a funny story ? he was attracted by her song when he was hunting on a mountain, so that he lost his way and rolled down from the hillside... Then, the girl responded him and invited him to come to her house from the other side of the river, and wished both of them to sing together under the tree in the moon light...

I was familiar with this song for I had learned it and translated it into English in 2007. But, when I sing it this week, I can not help smiling for the funny story and the beautiful tone once more. So, I re-translated, re-sang and re-recorded it.

I really hope that my learning job will bring you a relaxed time with a big smile, meanwhile, to help to you to know more about Chinese culture, to improve your Chinese listening ability...

MAIN MEANING OF THE SONG

You are a lovely rose ah,
Sai di ma li ya,
You are a lovely rose ah,
Sai di ma li ya,

That day I went to a mounain hunting on my horse ah,
you were singing on the hillside,
singing was flying to the clouds.
Your song made me lose my way,
I rolled down the hillside,
Ai ya ya,
Your singing flied up to the rosy clouds.

You are a strong youth Hasake(Kazakstan),
Yi fan du da er,
You are a strong youth Hasake(Kazakstan),
Yi fan du da er,
Tonight you're welcome
to cross the river to my house ah,
Feeding your horse up
and bringing your Dong Bu La,
When the moon is rising up,
Playing your strings,
Ai ya ya,
We are singing together under the tree.
