This is a very famous Chinese Xingjiang / Hasake folk song. Its lyric has been collected into the textbook of the high school -- All the Chinese high school students have to learn it as one of their language and literature lessons.

I enjoy its alive tone, full of the enthusiasm, positive emotion and funny lyrics...

I translated it into English and I taught myself to sing it in Chinese first time   Feb 17, 2008, then my music teacher corrected something for me in my music lesson. At that time, I could not sing it in English for the rhythm of the song is too fast.

After studying in the US for more than 9 months, I feel that maybe I can try to sing it in English. So, since Saturday morning, I have been working on it for about 10 hours. Now, I have completed the re-translation, re-sang it Chinese and sang it in English first time.

I really hope that my effort will be some help to you to learn Chinese culture and Chinese language.

THE MAIN MEANING OF THE SONG

People call me Ma Yi La,
poet Ma Yi La;
teeth is white,
sound is good,
singer Ma Yi La.
When I am happy,
I sing a song,
play my Dongbula, Dongbula.
coming and going poeple
are crowding under my eaves,
Ma Yi La,la yi la,
ha la la ku,la yi la,la yi la,
ha la la ku la yi la ya la,
la la la,la la la.

I am a Wali girl,
name Ma Yi La.
The edges of my white handkerchief
are embroidered roses.
Young Hasake,
everyone envies, envies me,
whose singing can compete with mine.
Ma Yi La,la yi la,
ha la la ku,la yi la,la yi la,
ha la la ku la yi la ya la,
la la la,la la la.

The edges of my white handkerchief
are embroidered roses,
who can come to sing a song
to match Ma Yi La.
Young Hasake,
everyone knows me, knows me,
They are running from the far away mountains,
Ma Yi La,la yi la,
ha la la ku,la yi la,la yi la,
ha la la ku la yi la ya la,
la la la,la la la.
